
In his free time, Grisham enjoys doing charity work and serving as the local Little League Commissioner. Since first publishing A Time to Kill, Grisham has written a novel a year, including The Firm, which spent 47 weeks on The New York Times bestsellers list, The Pelican Brief, The Runaway Jury, and The Client.

He spent three years writing the novel and finished it in 1987, where it was rejected by many publishers before being bought by Wynwood Press.

Grisham was inspired to write A Time to Kill after overhearing the testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim, whereupon he began to wonder what would have happened if the girl's father had murdered her assailants. HBO is in talks to develop a sequel TV series to A Time to Kill with Matthew McConaughey in talks to reprise his role as crusading attorney Jake Brigance. He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1983 and served until 1990. Grisham practiced law in Southaven for nearly a decade and specialized in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. Upon realizing that he did not have what it takes to play in the big leagues, he majored in accounting at Mississippi State University and graduated with a law degree in 1981.
